About
The Story of Vilia Chan
Chan Sze-wei, currently a contemporary dance student at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, is born and raised in Hong Kong. She trains in different forms of dance, but especially enjoys contemporary dance and Chinese dance. Due to being an energetic person and the elegance of the dancers, Sze-wei started dancing with her favour to ballet when she was six. In 2009 and 2010, Sze-wei completed the Junior Summer Dance School and International Summer Dance School Programme held by Jean M. Wong School of Ballet respectively. In 2018, she was named as a dancer in the one-year programme, called WuDaoQinNian 2017, held by City Contemporary Dance Company.
Performances and Competitions
Sze-wei participated in lots of performances in her dancing life, including the Stars of Tomorrow (2004-2010) and International Summer Dance School Performance 2010 held by Jean M. Wong School of Ballet, the Disney Performing Arts (2011 & 2013), Dance Expo. (2015 & 2017) held by Hong Kong Dance Federation and so forth.
She, further, got several awards in different dance competitions which include the first-runner up in the 6th Hong Kong School DanceSport Championship (2010), the Gold Awards in the Open Dance Contest (2010-2012 & 2015), and the Distinction Awards in School Dance Festival (2011-2014). After getting into Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Sze-wei was selected to perform in Choreographic Workshop One and Two, co-operating with Oscar Li (a year 3 contemporary student) and Shen Ong (a year 4 Chinese dance student).
She, moreover, has worked with different amazing choreographers like Jaime Redfern (Australia), Eugenia Kim (America), Popo Tso (Hong Kong), Li Yong-jing (Hong Kong), Tracy Wong (Macau), Tung Siu-hung (China) and Nicky Hu (China) and Mao-wei (China).
Qualifications
Sze-wei, what is more, has finished till grade five of general graded examination in The Royal Academy of Dance Examination with distinction and got a merit in level six and nine of Chinese Dance in Beijing Dance Academy.
Perspective of Dance
Forasmuch as the favour of dancing on stage and the means of communication, Sze-wei continuous dancing for fifteen years. Believing in an exchange of expression, she is now involving in different projects and co-operating with different choreographers for ideas-sharing and sustainably improving herself in knowledge and skills with her study.

Artistic Statement
Vilia Chan Sze Wei
With thousands of reasons, Sze-wei has chosen to stage her works on gender identity. She researches on herself in terms of gender, breaking the stereotype on one's body; further focusing on the LGBTQ+ discrimination. Sze-wei mainly uses Bartenieff Movement and Releasing Technique to support her practice, with the combination of yoga theory.
